School Finance Reform Is the Key to Property Tax Relief

The special session of the Texas Legislature will include more discussion and debate about property taxes (Senate Bill 2). An editorial in the Victoria Advocate makes the case that the best way to control property taxes would be to focus on school finance reform.

The percentage of state funding for education has fallen, making property taxpayers the losers in a political shell game that requires them to pay more. “The state needs to properly fund education and cuts its budget elsewhere. That would be the best for Texas and get local property taxes more in line,” the editorial reads.
