Texplainer Busts Myths about the Lottery Funding Public Ed

When Texas sold the lottery to voters, most people had the impression that 100 percent of the funds generated by the lottery would be used to fund public education. Some even thought that lottery revenue would cover the state’s education costs.

An article in the Texas Tribune explains that 27.1 percent of lottery revenue funds Texas education. That amounts to about 5 percent of the total funding for public schools. See Legislative Budget Board’s Fiscal Size Up (see page 228) for details.
